Microalgae: Closed Systems VS Open Systems

Industrial microalgae cultivation systems are divided into two main types: open systems or tanks and closed systems or photobioreactors (PBR). The only thing these two systems have in common is the need to maintain optimal growth factors, mainly: light, temperature, inorganic nutrients, pH. There are significant advantages in closed systems, as opposed to open ones, typically a better control of environmental parameters, absolutely essential for the growth of a quality algal biomass. The efficient use of light by algal cells allows to significantly increase the density of the cultures. Closed systems protect the exposure of the cultures to contamination of various types (parasites, environmental contamination…). In essence, the difference between tanks and PBR lies in obtaining a climate with few variations, which allows a careful control of environmental parameters and, consequently, also the control of the quality of the biomass. At REIMEX we have developed a type of photobioreactor that combines the typical features described above with a flexibility and reliability in crop management that make its use suitable for various direct applications in the agricultural field, such as fertigation. This is also thanks to a particular proprietary process of natural treatment of the crop itself for the subsequent marketing phase, which makes the product particularly rich, stable and high-performance.
